How to Choose a Sunscreen for the South African Sun
Share
South Africa has some of the highest UV levels in the world — our UV index regularly hits "extreme" in summer. And yet most of us skip sunscreen because we hate how it feels. The good news: modern sunscreens have solved that problem — the best ones feel like skincare, not like sunblock.
What the labels mean
SPF50+ measures protection against UVB (the burning rays). PA++++ is the rating for UVA protection (the ageing rays that penetrate glass and clouds). For SA conditions, SPF50+ PA++++ is the standard to look for — and it's what our range carries.
Pick by finish
Moisture / hydrating formulas suit dry or normal skin and give a dewy, glowy finish. Tone-up sunscreens contain a subtle tint — purple neutralizes yellow undertones, pink adds warmth to pale skin, green calms visible redness — so they double as a light makeup base. Primer-free / foundation-free formulas are designed to be worn alone with a soft, smooth finish — perfect if you want one product and out the door.
How much, how often
The amount matters more than the brand: about two finger-lengths for face and neck. Reapply every two hours in direct sun. If you're indoors most of the day, your morning application plus a top-up before an afternoon walk is realistic and far better than nothing.
The anti-ageing angle
If you're investing in collagen, PDRN or peptide skincare, sunscreen is what protects that investment — UV breaks down collagen faster than any serum can support it. SPF first, actives second.
